Although we could define tourist experiences as the sensation or set of feelings a person has during a trip or visit to a place, in this section, you will find tourist experiences in activity or event mode. That is, they do not exceed 24 hours in duration and, therefore, do not require an overnight stay.

Some of the experiences will include transportation to the place of performance or during some part of its execution, and others will not.

Although most of them will be carried out immediately, some may also have a break, for example, for lunch.

Some examples of experiences include:

  • Cultural tourism: visit with or without a guided museum, historical monuments, ruins and other sites of cultural interest.
  • Adventure tourism: outdoor activities such as hiking, rafting, skiing or diving, among others.
  • Nature tourism: explore national parks, nature reserves, and other places of natural beauty.
  • Beach tourism: relaxing on a beach, enjoying water sports and sunbathing.
  • Gastronomic tourism: taste the local food and discover the culinary culture of a place.
  • Wellness tourism: rest, relax and improve your health in a spa or wellness centre.

There are many other possible categories and combinations of various types of tourism, such as cultural and gastronomic tourism and adventure and nature tourism, among others.

Culture

When we talk about culture when it comes to tourism, we are referring to the activities that lead us to learn about history, art, discover the customs of the inhabitants of a place, savor its gastronomy and enjoy a to see the world.

What are the benefits of the culture offered in tourism? To give some examples, we would have the preservation of artistic and cultural heritage, the economic prosperity of places “not very touristy” or the establishment of bridges between different cultures. At a more material level, we can point out the impact on the economy and employment.

Some examples of cultural tourism would be:

  • Traditional festivals and celebrations
  • Visit to museums or interpretation centers
  • Visit to historical and artistic monuments
  • Industrial tourism activities
  • Visit to natural enclaves with cultural value

  • Fiestas y celebraciones tradicionales
  • Visita a museos o centros de interpretación
  • Visita a monumentos históricos y artísticos
  • Actividades de turismo industrial

Courses and workshops

Sign up for courses and workshops, and value your free time as a perfect moment to dedicate it to learning what interests you. What better idea than doing it in a totally different environment than usual?

We can find short-term training, generally called a workshop, or long-term (several days), in which case we will call it a course. The workshop, due to its short duration, is usually completely dedicated to practice, while the courses incorporate at least a theoretical and a practical part (although this practical part is not always given).

A course is a learning program that allows us to grow professionally or personally in a specific area of interest.

A workshop is a learning system in which the participants intervene offering their knowledge on the subject, thus enriching the teaching.

Gastronomic tourism

Gastronomic tourism, also known as culinary tourism or food and beverage tourism, is a form of tourism where the interest is placed in the gastronomy and culinary culture of the country that is visited. Gastronomic tourism is the search for unique and memorable gastronomic experiences both near and far from our place of origin.

Gastronomy serves as a starting point and is the main reason for learning about the culture of a country or a place. To a certain extent, it shows the traveller, from a cultural point of view, what is eaten in that place.

Gastronomic tourism is based on enjoying food while we travel and discover unknown places. In fact, more and more tourists are choosing to travel to one place or another based on its gastronomy. And Spain, precisely, is among the most chosen countries for this reason.

This tourism includes activities such as:

  • Take cooking classes
  • Take food tours
  • Attend food and drink festivals
  • Enjoy unique gastronomic experiences
  • Buy in stores and specialty stores
  • Visit farms, markets and producers

Industrial tourism

With the term industrial tourism we will refer to any tourist activity that relates tourists to the different local industries, whether or not they are in operation, according to their industrial activity.

Within industrial tourism, we can differentiate two modalities. On the one hand, we have active industrial tourism, which refers to visits to active companies by tourists, with the main objective of learning about their production processes.

On the other hand, we have industrial heritage tourism, which refers to visiting disused industrial buildings and facilities, with the main objective of learning about the “know-how” of the past industry and thus getting closer to the culture and identity of its environment.

One of the main benefits is education, as it can be fantastic for students or for people who simply want to learn more about a particular industry.

Another key benefit is money, as money can help boost the economy by contributing money. You can earn money through tickets, souvenirs and more.

Some examples would be:

  • Visits to factories
  • Visits to mines
  • Visits to farms
  • Visits to wineries
  • Visits to Parliament
  • Visits to specific company facilities

Urban tourism

Urban tourism or city tourism is a type of tourism that takes place within urban areas, especially in the large cities of each country.

Through urban tourism, the attractions offered by the city are valued: visits to buildings of all kinds (museums, historic buildings, cathedrals, monuments, etc.), attendance at massive events (concerts, festivals, exhibitions, etc.) and the offer of nightlife for recreation. This also contemplates nature within urban parks and other types of green areas within the limits of a city.

Enotourism

Enotourism activities include those that are related to the world of wine and sparkling wines. It can be a visit to a winery (with or without tasting), a walk through some vineyards, a wine tasting in a restaurant, etc.

Wine culture, wine architecture, wine landscape and wine itself come together in a proposal that seeks to convey the essence of a region through its link to the wine product.

It is encompassed within cultural tourism, and more specifically within gastronomic tourism, since the purpose is to make known and train the public in the world of wine.

Enotourism so refers to tourism whose purpose is or includes the tasting, consumption or purchase of wine, often at or near the source.
